And, there are times that neighbours and family members worry that seniors who rely on others for care are being neglected. In situations like these, many of us are uncertain about when to ask the police to help keep seniors safe.

In July 2008 BCCEAS opened the first legal clinic for older adults  in Western Canada.  During the year leading up to the opening of the Clinic, extensive research was conducted in order to determine the optimum service delivery model, best practices, and service priorities for this clinic (the “Needs Assessment”). This report summarizes the results of the research and sets out a business plan for the Clinic based on the needs identified by this research.

Abuse and neglect of seniors is a complex issue with potentially devastating effects on older people who may lack the ability to protect themselves or bounce back from losses. Responding effectively requires a variety of responses and a coordinated community effort.

Summary Report on Research Findings

This twenty-five page report was Prepared by Pearl McKenzie in February, 2005. It summarizes the research work conducted by BCCEAS, barriers and problems faced, and recommendations for training and collaboration between police and designated agency staff and for further protocol or guideline development.

This education kit was developed to assist people who are working to prevent and stop abuse and neglect of seniors. The kit contains a 20-minute DVD entitled Finding A Future for Ellen with discussion guides for presenting the film as well as a PowerPoint  presentation and speaker’s notes on CD. Information sheets and handouts for both presentations are also included.
