Eligibility for legal services
We can provide legal information and legal advice to all older adults who call the Seniors Help and Information Line. We can only provide legal representation, such as assistance in court or at a hearing, to older adults who are eligible for services and have legal issues in our priority areas.
Eligibility requirements
- 55+ years old (or legal representative of someone 55+)
- Not otherwise able to access justice
- Have experienced abuse or have had fundamental rights denied
Service Priority Areas
After extensive consultation with the community and conducting extensive research on community needs, we have set service priority areas. The highest priority area is for older adults who have experienced abuse or are vulnerable to abuse and need a legal remedy to ensure their safety. As well, priority is given to cases where older adults have the following legal problems:
- Access to housing
- Legal problems in assisted living or long term care
- Access to government benefits
- Financial abuse
For more information on how these priority areas were set, see the Elder Law Clinic Needs Assessment and Business Plan which can be downloaded from our website.
