The Elder Law Clinic offers free legal advice and representation provided by lawyers. Legal services are provided to clients who are eligible for services and have a legal problem that fits into priority areas identified through an extensive community consultation process.

Eligible clients are referred to the Elder Law Clinic after participating in a Legal Consultation. For more information or a referral to the legal services call the Seniors Information and Help Line.

In 2007 BCCEAS received funding from the Law Foundation for a legal clinic staffed by lawyer(s), and in 2008 our Elder Law Clinic opened.

In the year prior to the clinic opening BC CEAS conducted and extensive research project which examined community needs, service delivery models and service priorities. This research included a literature review, field research and consultation with two experts, Judith Wahl the executive director of the Advocacy Centre for the Elderly in Ontario, and Bob Rhudy a known expert on legal aid clinics for older adults in the United States. The field research included surveys of 212 older adults, interviews with representatives of 27 local agencies and focus groups at a community forum attended by 110 people. A three year business plan was developed based on the results of the research.

Our Elder Law Clinic is the first legal aid clinic for older adults in western Canada, and the second in all of Canada. The first legal aid clinic for older adults is the Advocacy Centre for the Elderly in Ontario.
